On its website, the Colombian Dentist Association recommends seeing your dentist twice a year in order to detect dental problems such as cavities, gum disease or oral cancer.

The best way to avoid these types of conditions, as the association states, is to practice a healthy hygiene regime. This includes:

Brushing correctly. Most people do not brush or brush incorrectly, making for a less efficient clean. The recommendation is to hold the brush at the gumline at a 45-degree angle and brush softly using circular movements. This should take a total of 2 minutes.

Brushing your tongue. About 50% of all the bacteria in your mouth is found on the tongue’s surface. It is therefore recommended it to brush frequently with a tongue cleaner using forward and backward movements

Changing your toothbrush every three months. This is because your toothbrush loses its effectiveness and can damage your gums. Toothbrushes also collect bacteria that can compromise your oral health.

Using the right toothpaste. A great variety of toothpastes are available on the market. They are designed to prevent conditions such as cavities, gingivitis, tartar build-up, stained teeth and sensitivity.
