The effects of shouting on children’s brains

Special 23 April, 2018 0

A joint study conducted by the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Michigan revealed how shouting affects children’s minds.

  • Shouting affects the human brain and its neurological development, making it hard for an apology to serve as a solution for repairing any damage, “The damage has already been done, as the stress hormone, known as cortisol, has already been released, activating the warning system.”
  • If a parent shouts frequently, the constant production of cortisol can lead children to a prolonged state of alarm, preventing them from thinking clearly.
  • Shouting reduces the development of the hippocampus, which affects the control people have over their emotions and memory.
  • It also affects the union between both hemispheres of the brain, reducing blood flow and affecting emotional balance.
  • In general, children who live in noisy and hectic environments later display problematic behaviors.

“As adults, it is common to repeat the behaviors we learn as children. It is time to make a change, however, and understand that disciplining and teaching children without hurting them is the best way to ensure that our children will be both physically and emotionally healthy,” the study states.
