Many of the benefits of different fruits and vegetables can be identified by their color.

Below are their main properties, by color:

  • Yellow or orange. These fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamin A, alfa-carotene and beta-carotene, potassium, folic acid and xanthine, which are all highly recommended for eye health. They are also known for helping keep the immune system strong. The most widely-recognized ones include carrots, squash, papayas, oranges, pineapples, mandarins and lemons.
  • Red. This category contains very important antioxidants, such as lycopene, which are good for cardiovascular health and memory and help protect the body from certain types of cancer. Some of the most beneficial fruits and vegetables from this category include strawberries, cherries, pomegranates, watermelon, grapes, radishes and red onions.
  • White. This category helps keep cholesterol levels low and reduces the risk of heart disease. It includes white, cream-colored or light brown fruits and vegetables such as bananas and plantains, cauliflower, dates, onions, peaches, garlic, ginger and mushrooms.
  • Green. This category is known for having magnesium, folic acid and vitamins C and K. They help keep the bones and teeth strong and help protect your eye health. Foods in this color group include olives, limes, avocados, kiwis, lettuce, arugula, cilantro, green peppers and spinach.
