As adults, we are one of the greatest models of behavior for children. Set an example to help them develop a healthy lifestyle.

Cooking, walking, playing sports and eating together as a family will motivate them to maintain practices for a healthy lifestyle

The following are some tips from the U.S. nutrition program Choose My Plate on being a healthy role model for your children:

  1.   Go grocery shopping together. Going to the supermarket can help children have a better understanding the of the variety of foods they eat at home and of the origins and properties of these foods.
  2.   Lead by example. When a child sees their parents or family members eating fresh vegetables or fruits, for example, they are more likely to be motivated to try them as well and make them a part of their own daily diet.
  3.   Encourage your family to exercise. This is not just about going to watch your children play; instead, engage with your children when they go to play. Some ideas include going for a walk, running, riding a bike or playing outside.
  4.   Limit screen time. Spending too much time in front of televisions, smart phones, tablets or any other mobile device makes children more sedentary. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children spend no more than 2 hours a day on these activities.
