According to a study from the new Ohio State University, dinner is one of the meals that most greatly affects one’s diet, and as a result, affects weight as well.

Fat production is not only related to excessive eating or to not eating healthy at night. There are other factors that make people gain a few pounds without being aware of it.

After interviewing more than 12,800 residents from the state of Ohio in the U.S., this research concluded that people that do not watch television or movies during dinner have a 37% less chance of being obese than those who look at a screen while they eat. This occurs because people stop listening to the sound of themselves chewing, leading people to eat in excess.

Whether you eat alone or as a family, the general recommendation is to take time to eat without having any distractions. “The more attention you pay to your food, the less likely it is that you will overeat,” the study’s experts explain.

The study adds that consistent exposure to light at night, including the light emitted from a computer or television screen, may lead to weight gain. Researchers believe that light affects melatonin levels, a hormone that is involved in our metabolism.
