Christmas celebrations can be challenging for those who are vegetarian. Learn how to enjoy this holiday without interrupting your lifestyle.
During the December holiday season, gatherings with friends and family tend to come with traditional dishes that have animal proteins such as chicken and pork. This can make it more difficult for vegetarians to enjoy their meal.
There are ways, however, to enjoy Christmas while still being vegetarian and leading a balanced diet that is just as delicious. Here are a few tips:
- Communication is key: Tell your friends, family members and acquaintances ahead of time that you will not eat any type of animal protein. Consider making your own meal and bringing it with you.
- If you choose to make your own meal, the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends including different-colored fruits and vegetables and – as sources of protein – whole grains such as quinoa or other grains, beans, nuts, seeds or soy products.
- You can also prepare a vegetarian meal to share with your friends and family and encourage them to try eating snacks without animal protein as a way of integrating them into parties. One simple option is to serve hummus or guacamole with bread or crackers.
A key part of enjoying any meal in any type of environment is to be creative, to combine different colors when serving your dish and to have a balance of vegetables, fruits, grains and proteins.
