Massages: another way of fighting off anxiety
Armony in health 16 December, 2019
Massages are one approach to reducing stress and pain, as they provide a general state of relaxation.
Specialists use massage as a complementary treatment for a wide range of diseases. However, more than being a way to relieve muscle tension and improve the moods of people who are going through difficult medical situations, massages have been found to be very helpful for having a direct impact on reducing the physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety.
According to the webpage Saludalia, having pressure or friction on the skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments sends a calming message to the sympathetic nervous system, which then helps the body benefit from a series of physiological changes. For example, having a more relaxed mind can help a person forget about their daily problems, can reduce headaches, and can help the body fall asleep easier.
While there are many different types of massages, the most recommended type for treating anxiety are Swedish massages. By using large, circular and deep movements and by focusing on the back, neck, legs and arms, these types of massages help lower cortisol levels (a stress hormone). They normally last between 45 and 60 minutes and they have much more positive effects if they are given along with relaxing music.
Keep in mind
While a massage alone cannot eliminate the source of anxiety, working on the mind and body together in a comprehensive way can help bring a more positive perspective to life.
