Knee problems are very common and can occur at any age.
According to the United States A.D.A.M. Medical Encyclopedia webpage, these injuries can interfere with many activities from playing sports to being able to get out of a chair and walk. This can have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life.
The most common disease that affects the bones in the knees is arthritis, which occurs when the cartilage of the knees gradually wears out, causing pain and inflammation. Ligament and tendon injuries can also cause problems.
The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases explains that one common injury is that which occurs in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), generally caused by a sudden, twisting movement.
In each case, the treatment depends on the cause. In some cases, the doctor may recommend a knee replacement.
