Establishing a diet for your pregnancy is a task that every mother should do to know how much she should eat and if she has any special nutritional needs.
Nutritionist Marcela Ramos gives us a few tips on this matter:
- If the expecting mother is healthy, giving in to a craving on occasion is okay. You just have to be careful that this does not become a habit.
- Expecting mothers generally crave high-calorie foods that contain a lot of fat and sugar, which are not the best for them. Try to find a balance.
- Cravings can also come from physical inactivity. Find a hobby or distraction that helps the mother take her mind off food.
- Consuming an excess amount of salt can cause preeclampsia. (See also: Watch out for high blood pressure during pregnancy). The excess consumption of sweets, on the other hand, can cause obesity or gestational diabetes. (See also: Gestational diabetes: what it is and how to treat it).
- Craving are not just about what you eat, but the sensations the food brings. It is important to understand that they are experienced in a whole new way.
“It is important to clarify that not all women get cravings. Many of them don’t even realize that they are pregnant until they are at a very advanced stage. Cravings do happen, however, “adds Ramos, who assures that this depends on each person, or on whether the body is deficient of a nutrient, such as iron. Psychology also plays a role here. The recommendation is to seek out specialized help in order to establish a personalized plan that fits each mother’s state of health. Keep in mind: Pregnancy-related discomfort such as nausea and vomiting are common up until 12 weeks. Mothers will often look for something to quench their thirst such as ice.
