You have seen them with catchy designs, plain, and made of different materials. Which mask is the best?
General purpose (non-hospital) face masks are used to prevent the spread of COVID-19. A guideline from the Colombian Ministry of Health advises that each manufacturer selects the proper materials that block saliva and other fluids and allow easy breathing.
It is important to cover your nose and mouth without obstructing or impeding airflow. Cloth masks are recommended for the general public so that surgical and N95 masks can be reserved for health care professionals.
Pay attention to the instructions from each manufacturer. Normally, the waterproof layer (which is sometimes colorful) should be on the outside, as this is the layer responsible for blocking moisture. It is also recommended that face masks have a comfortable shape and ties that fit snugly without being too loose. Additionally, the Ministry of Health reminds users to diligently wash cloth face masks after each use with soap and water, either by hand using gloves or in a washing machine.
Keep in mind
Currently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks are required on public transportation, in high-traffic areas such as parks, grocery stores, plazas, and pharmacies, if you have respiratory symptoms, or if you belong to an at-risk population. Face masks should not be worn by children under the age of two or by people who have respiratory difficulties, are unconscious, or have a disability.
