While it is a substance that can fill you with energy, you should have a good understanding of how your body reacts to its consumption and set a personal limit.
Kicking off the day with a good cup of coffee tends to be a habit for many, and can even be part of a healthy diet. However, coffee is not the only source of caffeine and excessive consumption of it can be harmful to health. For that reason, it is important to know which foods and drinks contain caffeine and what amount is considered healthy.
An 8oz cup of coffee usually contains between 80-100mg of caffeine, while the amount in an energy drink can vary between 40-250mg for every 8oz of liquid. Caffeine can also be found naturally in teas, chocolate and plants such as yerba mate and guayusa (Ilex guayusa). It is also vital to read the labels of processed foods, as even if they claim to be caffeine-free they still contain small amounts.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), 400mg of caffeine per day (4 of 5 cups of coffee) is an amount that might not have negative effects. Beyond that, however, there is no exact figure to say how much caffeine is excessive, and its effects will depend on how sensitive each person is in metabolizing it.
The following are some of the symptoms that, according to the FDA, reveal whether you are consuming too much caffeine, or it is producing adverse effects:
- Accelerated heartbeat
- Stomach upsets
- Feelings of sadness (dysphoria)
