There are several reasons why our lips get dry and can cause us discomfort. The most common reasons are related to weather-related factors such as UV rays, a dry climate and cold wind.
“Split lips or cheilitis occur when there the hydration from the natural oils and lipids of the outer layer of the lip is lost, causing dryness and cracks,” states the American Academy of Dermatology.
The following are three tips for treating dry lips:
- To avoid peeling, eat a healthy diet that is high in vitamin B and iron. Apply lip balms that offer elasticity and protect against external agents.
- Exfoliate to remove dead skin and to renew tissue.
- Drink plenty of water to help keep the lips moisturized.
Habits such as smoking, taking certain medications as well as some autoimmune diseases tend to keep your lips dry. When cracks in the lips are deep and become inflamed, they can cause infections, fungus and painful mouth sores. It is therefore recommended to see a specialist who can make a diagnosis and determine the best treatment.
