- External hemorrhoids form outside the anus and they can make it difficult to wipe after a having a bowel movement. If a blood clot forms on an external hemorrhoid, it can be very painful.
Over-the-counter corticoid creams (such as cortisone) can help reduce pain and swelling. Other forms of reducing their size as well as swelling include using cotton underwear, avoiding the use of scented or colored tissue, and trying not to itch the area.
