 While mouthwashes reduce the risk of cavities and bacterial plaque, according to EFE Salud, they can also turn your teeth a yellowish color, cause changes in your sense of taste and keep major oral lesions hidden. Mouthwashes generally have antiseptic and astringent properties, and are used to treat conditions such as gingivitis, stomatitis, among others.

The General Council of Dentists of Spain also recommends that mouthwashes only be used for cases the dentist considers necessary, and emphasizes that it should only be used in addition to using a toothbrush, floss and toothpaste, and never to replace them.
