A neuron is a type of cell that is responsible for sending information through electric impulses. We have billions of them and they are fundamental to having a healthy nervous system. According to the Colombian Mental Health Association, neurons have extensions, which are nerve fibers that have a sort of sheath called menin. These are very important to facilitating communication between neurons.

Omega 3, essential to the brain

There is a debate among scientists regarding the two types of omegas: omega 3 and omega 6. Initially, the recommendation was to consume four units of omega 6 for every one unit of omega 3. Recently, however, consuming more omega 3 has been recommended.

Serotonin: The happiness hormone

As explained by the medical journal Medical News Today, serotonin is a chemical substance produced by the human body that sends signals between the nerves, and functions as a neurotransmitter. Some researchers consider it to be the chemical substance that is responsible for keeping our mood in balance, which is why low serotonin levels can lead to depression. According to the journal’s publication, serotonin is especially involved in the contractions of smooth muscle, in transmitting impulses between nerves, in regulating the body’s circadian processes and in contributing to wellbeing.
