Parasites? Or an upset stomach?

Having a parasite is much more common than you think. To prevent serious diseases, it is important to know what the symptoms are of having parasites.

How do I know if I have a parasite or an upset stomach? There are over 1,000 types of parasites; so, symptoms can therefore vary. The symptoms of most of these infections, however, are similar to food poisoning including diarrhea, stomach cramps, achiness, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, an overall sense of fatigue, unexplainable rashes or skin irritations, coughing and unintentional weight loss.

According to Pascale M. White, Director of the Gastroenterology Clinic and Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the key to determining whether you have parasites is based on a combination of symptoms and their duration.

“Keep in mind that some parasites can remain in the human body for months or years without causing any symptoms. So, it is important to have a good medical history and record your travels. As doctors, we consider all of these signs and symptoms when diagnosing a parasite infection.”

If you notice any of these stomach issues, have traveled abroad recently, have been in contact with animals, may have consumed something that was contaminated, or if you can’t find any other explanation for your symptoms, the recommendation is to see your general physician or a gastroenterologist.
