While this infection can be painful and debilitating, knowing what you should eat as you recover will help you get through it.

According to the website MedlinePlus, gastroenteritis (or the stomach flu) is commonly caused by a virus; however, it can also be caused by a bacterial infection, by eating in excess, eating spoiled food (food poisoning), or simply because of a food intolerance.

According to the Spanish Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, fasting during the first 24 hours of the stomach flu can be helpful. It is especially important to stay hydrated in order to replenish the liquids and electrolytes that were lost through vomiting and diarrhea. Other signs of this condition include loss of appetite, nausea and stomach pain.

The best way to rehydrate is to drink hydration solutions and herbal teas without sweeteners (chamomile and anise tea can help reduce nausea) or water with a few drops of lemon. You should drink about two liters a day. To achieve this, try drinking two tablespoons every 5 minutes.

After the first 24 hours you can begin to eat in small portions. Try starting by eating yogurt that is rich in bifidobacteria, which helps to reset the intestinal flora that has been damaged from diarrhea and is also easy to digest.

After the infection is over (between 3 to 4 days after), Spanish Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends introducing a soft diet consisting of several small meals frequently. Include foods that are easy to digest as well as astringent foods such as white rice, potatoes, cooked carrots, grilled or baked chicken breasts, well-cooked omelets or poached or grilled white fish.

Be cautious with eating fiber

During the first five days, to prevent activating your digestive tract, avoid fruits that are high in fiber such as kiwis or plums. Because of the caffeine they contain, drinking coffee or tea is also not recommended.
