This protein can actually be difficult for some people to digest. According to the School of Medicine at New York University, an estimated 1% of the world’s population suffers from this condition known as celiac disease, also more common in women than in men.
If someone who suffers from celiac disease eats gluten or any other food that contains gluten, an autoimmune response occurs causing inflammation and deterioration of the mucous membranes in the small intestine. This does not allow for nutrients to be absorbed properly, which can cause other related symptoms or problems such as:
Constipation, gasses, bloating and diarrhea. These intestine conditions may indicate that a person is gluten intolerant.
The diagnosis of an autoimmune disease. Conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, lupus, psoriasis, scleroderma or multiple sclerosis are all caused by an autoimmune disease, which can be treated by avoiding the consumption of gluten.
Neurological symptoms. Gluten intolerance can cause symptoms such as dizziness and may also be the cause of headaches and migraines.
