Colon cancer is a malignant tumor located in the middle of the digestive tract.
According to the World Health Organization, colon cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide. However, as the Spanish Association Against Cancer indicates, 90% of cases can be cured if they are detected on time. The following are some of the most common symptoms of this disease:
- Red or dark colored blood that appears in stool.
- Changes in bowel movements such as diarrhea, constipation or a combination of both.
- Stool that is thin or thinner than usual and is ribbon-like.
- The feeling that your bowels have not completely emptied after going to the bathroom.
- Abdominal pain, similar to cramping.
- A bloated abdomen, gas or vomiting.
- Weight loss for no justifiable reason.
- Daily fatigue, even if you get enough sleep at night.
According to the Spanish Association Against Cancer, this condition is most common when there is a family history of colon cancer. It is also common if the patient has had an inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease or another type of malignant tumor.
To prevent colon cancer, eat a diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables and whole foods and is low in red and processed meats. Increasing the intensity and amount of physical activity you do (anything that makes you breathe heavy like you would during a brisk walk) also decreases your risk of colon cancer.
