In the interview, Peinado affirms that it is more common for men to have less healthy habits, such as drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes. This is why disease is more common among men, such as some types of cancer and even heart disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, by the end of 2019, more than 174,000 new cases of prostate cancer will have been diagnosed in the United States.

While regular physical activity and a balanced diet are known to be part of prevention, experts provide some recommendations:

  • Starting at age 50, get regular prostate checkups with a specialist. If you have a history of prostate disease, its best to get these checkups starting at age 45.
  • Once a month, do a testicular self-exam to check for potential lumps or any changes in them. Remember to also maintain proper hygiene in the genital area.
  • Watch for any changes you notice in your urine, for example, and how often you go to the bathroom.
  • Try to drink at least two liters (about 8 cups) of water a day and avoid replacing this water with other liquids to prevent kidney stones from forming, which is more recurrent in men.
