Calcium, phosphorus, fluoride and vitamins A, B, C and D, in addition to proper oral hygiene, are essential parts of a healthy diet.

According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, including certain foods in your diet can help prevent certain oral diseases and also alleviate pain after certain dental procedures. Some of the most recommended foods include:

1. Oily fish. Periodontal diseases such as gingivitis are caused by bacteria found in food debris that is trapped between the teeth.

Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, making the gums and teeth more resistant to this type of infection. It can be obtained from fish such as salmon, sardines or tuna.

2. Kiwi, grapefruit or papaya. These are foods that are rich in vitamin C that can help prevent the production of collagen from declining. This protein molecule is the main component of the gums, so a loss of this vitamin can cause significant problems such as a receding gumline.

Vitamin C is found in foods such as oranges, lemons, grapefruits, tangerines, kiwis, red peppers, parsley, broccoli or papayas.

3. Yoghurts and dairy products. Foods such as milk, cheese and yogurt are a great source of calcium, a mineral that is essential for the bones and teeth. When you eat cheese you produce more saliva, which is high in bactericidal properties.

Keep in mind that spinach, garbanzo beans, squid, broccoli and tofu are also good sources of calcium.
