Warfarin (often also referred to as coumadin) is a medication that is used to treat and prevent blood clots that interfere with blood flow. It is not enough just to take this medication, however, as diet can potentially slow or increase its effects.

According to the Mayo Clinic , there is no specific diet patients should follow. However, according to MedlinePlus, certain food groups can interfere with its anticoagulant properties, canceling out the effects of Warfarin. Such food groups include green leafy vegetables, which are rich in vitamin K, considered to be the blood-clotting vitamin.

While taking this medicine, patients should avoid consuming kale, spinach, cauliflower, turnip greens, chard, mustard greens, parsley, romaine lettuce, green lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, asparagus, and green and black teas. Drinks like cranberry juice can increase its effects and cause bleeding. If patients want or need to ingest sources of vitamin K, it is important they talk with their medical specialist to adjust the dose of their medication.
