What is a ketogenic diet? What is a ketogenic diet?

This was the one of the most frequent Google searches in 2019. This was due to the growing number of digital influencers that support following certain diets and eating foods to lose weight, and the ketogenic diet is one of these diets.

A ketogenic diet is low in carbohydrates. As the Mayo Clinic explains,  this diet consists of foods that are high in protein and fat. The diet’s main objective is for the body to obtain the majority of its calories from fats in order to “force the body to use different energy systems. Instead of using carbohydrates for energy, the body burns fat and, by doing so, it enters a state called ketosis.”

Some studies confirm that the diet could be beneficial for keeping blood sugar levels under control and for protecting the brain; nevertheless, there is still not enough evidence to prove that this type of diet is effective or safe for the body. “Meeting the diet’s requirements means cutting out many healthy foods, making it difficult to meet your micronutrient needs,” the Mayo Clinic states on its website.

It is important to consult with nutrition experts and your doctor before choosing a diet in order to stay away from trends that have an effect on the health of your body.
